As London's second financial hub¸ Canary Wharf is full of towering office buildings that its streets are remains relatively busy in the New Year. According to the latest update from JLL UK team, Canary Wharf rental market in the first month of 2022 is strong in demand that lettings figures are higher than the same period of last year.

The UK government has been encouraging citizen to “learn to live” with the coronavirus since last summer that people has been getting back to office. According to TfL journey figures, the highest day for the City section in the first half year of 2021 was on May 27. Entry and exit taps totaled 264,637 on that Thursday. Canary Wharf was one of the busy stations where 37,393 taps were made that day.

High rental demand in different new build

With an excellent transport network, Canary Wharf remains a lucrative spot in which to own real estate in England’s capital. Analysis of LonRes 2021 data shows that most of the capital’s prime neighbourhoods achieved upward growth in the average rent. While Canary Wharf and the Docklands is the most affordable pocket of the prime rental market with the monthly rent averaging £1,980, 5% up compare with Q3 2021. It means that people are likely to stary in Canary Wharf enjoying the cost-effective choices of high-end apartments.

According to JLL UK team, activity of new applicants’ registration is active that demand for property in Canary Wharf is high. In the first week of January, there have already more than 9 deals of lettings are agreed from JLL UK which is higher than any previous January.

New builds in Canary Wharf have achieved sharp rental growth compare with last year.
The 1-bed rent of Landmark Pinnacle, one of London's tallest residential tower, is currently range between £2,000 to £2,600 per month, 36% higher than Q1 2021. The Units are now rented up to floor 70 that luxury studio apartments are the most popular now.

我從小在倫敦長大,平日放假我和我的家人就經常會前往倫敦附近的薩里郡Surrey去度週末/長假,我的童年很多美好的回憶都與Surrey分不開。

Surrey傳統上是英國較為富裕的地區,通常會有許多中高級企業員工居住在薩里郡,通勤到倫敦上班。Kingston西南方向的任何地方都被戲稱為“Gin and Jag County”。這是一個口語化的術語,用來定義中上階層,譬如喝杜松子酒及駕駛捷豹(Jaguars)等豪華汽車。儘管現在可能不是那麼常見的短語,但它確實讓人對這個地區的前景有了一個瞭解。當然,吸引家庭的共同因素一直存在於該地區:一流的學校,非常適合安靜的家庭生活方式,有大量的開放空間,對於那些在倫敦工作的人來說,出入倫敦很方便。

Growing up in London, it was quite common for my family and I to spend time in Surrey. In fact, quite a few of my childhood memories and experiences in the UK are based on my time spent in towns and places in the county.

Surrey is traditionally a more affluent area of the UK, and usually sees many mid-to-senior level corporate workers living in Surrey and commuting into London for work. Anything further south-west of Kingston was jokingly referred to as “Gin and Jag” country, or the “Gin and Jag belt”. This is a colloquial term used to define the upper-middle class, characterized by drinking gin and tonics as well as driving luxury cars such as Jaguars. Although perhaps not as common a phrase nowadays, it does give one an idea of what to expect in the area. Of course, the common attraction factors for families have always been present in the area: great schools, well-suited to quiet family lifestyles with plenty of open space and an easy commute into London for those working in the City.

There would be many times that my family and I would spend some of the summer holidays in the more relaxed countryside of Surrey. I fondly remember my time spent in Oatlands Park Hotel, which has an amazing history behind it. Standing on the original site of the grand royal palace built by Henry VIII, the hotel is a Grade II listed hotel that has been carefully restored. The land was acquired by Henry VIII in the 1540s to build a Royal Tudor Palace and was home to many of Henry VIII’s wives. The hotel itself was built in 1853. Thinking back, I remember spending my time here walking the massive grounds and eating incredibly traditional British meals (Sunday Roast, afternoon tea etc.).

The nearby town of Weybridge is also quite popular with commuters and those looking to settle down in detached house with backyards to enjoy some private greenspace. Of course, ultra-prime areas are also present in Surrey with St. Georges Hill perhaps being the most famous. Other highly sought-after areas include Cobham and Esher, known for its many golf courses and the latter being close by to Sandown Racecourse. On the family side of things, the excellent choices of both private and state schools are surely another big pull. For those looking for a taste of home, The Good Earth in Esher has been a family favorite for high-end Chinese food, with the crispy duck as their signature dish. Nowadays, The Good Earth has quite a few locations across Surrey and London, so be sure to give it a try on your next visit.

Personally, I spent a decent amount of time with family friends who lived in Walton-on-Thames, a quite traditional suburban town close to Wimbledon. During the summer months, our families would get together to enjoy the sunshine and catch up. If I were to visit Surrey today, I would be sure to visit the Surrey Hills. Designated as an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” (AONB), a nationally protected landscape that stretches across the county. The area includes many woodlands, walking/running/cycling paths as well as horse-riding and arts & culture attractions to its visitors. The Surrey Hills, which spreads over 422 square kilometers, encapsulates the natural beauty of Surrey with its gently rolling hills and greenery captivating all that visit.

Ultimately, the county Surrey spreads across South East England and will remain a popular and sough-after choice for affluent families in England. With its combination of great schools, tranquil lifestyle and generally easy commute into London make it easy to see why it is a family-friendly and popular place for London-based commuters.

My vacation in Lisbon was almost by accident and almost shouldn’t have happened. For the winter of 2018, I had planned to traverse the North African country of Morocco, spending time in Marrakech before tackling the Atlas Mountains, Sahara Desert and then enjoying the cultural parts of the ancient city of Fes.

One of the last things to get planned was where to stay on the way back from Morocco. It was decided that we spend a week in Lisbon, with it being a hub of connections to the Middle East and other major destinations. My time in Lisbon has ultimately led me to say that it is a highly underrated and often overlooked European destination.

 

The Old Town District, Alfama

We decided to stay in the neighborhood of Alfama, the old town district. Plenty of character, old buildings, narrow cobbled streets. Instead of a hotel, we chose a 2-bedroom serviced apartment which was newly refurbished. Although the building had plenty of character and all appliances worked brilliantly, it was still an older building with no lift (we lived on the top floor) and only a narrow staircase to walk up. I certainly see why new-builds with an elevator would be in high demand in Lisbon.

A Gourmet Journey of Portuguese History and Influences

I think many people will agree with me that exploring new cuisines is one of the best aspects of travelling. In Portugal, it is impossible to avoid cod and sardines, cooked in a thousand different ways. Overall, I found the food to be incredibly good and it was very interesting to taste Portuguese history and influences from around the world in its cuisine. For foodies, I recommend spending a good amount of time at the Timeout Food Market, which showcases food from the best restaurants and chefs from around Portugal, as well as artisanal food products from around the country. The food market nature of the area means that everyone is free to explore and choose what they would like to eat, so definitely go with a group.

 

 

After spending more than a week in Morocco, I was looking forward to having a drink and thankfully, I found that Lisbon has some great places to grab a cold drink. I caught up with friends in a local restaurant run by grandpa and grandma trying to order despite the language barrier. I would always recommend being adventurous and going to small restaurants without flashy advertising. In terms of nightlife, my favorite memory was seeing a hole in the wall (literally), which turned out to be a speakeasy bar (called Ulysses), run by a Portuguese/Canadian who used to be a professor at my university! It was a really interesting find, offering guests bespoke cocktails with no menu. The bartender asks what you like and then makes you a cocktail on the spot. It seats a maximum of eight people, and that is a tight fit! All in all, given the quality of the food, I found myself spending roughly half the amount as I normally would for dining out as when compared to London or Amsterdam.

Sightseeing

I found getting around Lisbon to be very convenient. I prefer walking around a city when I am traveling, and Lisbon was no exception as it gives a better perspective of the place you are visiting. However, using the Metro is also very straightforward and convenient. I would highly recommend taking the #28 tram as it goes through some of the narrowest parts of town and has a stop in Lisbon’s very own Chinatown – just beware of pickpockets!

 

 

One of the highlights of walking around Lisbon was getting to see the various architectural styles that the buildings have to offer. My personal favorite was noticing the intricate details of the Azulejo tiles (brief history, 13th century, etc.). It is interesting to see the different drawings and colors that occur throughout the city. You will sometimes also see these designs in the interiors of fancy cafes.

 

 

As for getting a taste of the Christmas spirit in Lisbon, hang-out in Praca do Comercio – pedestrian-only streets with little stores and sidewalk cafes.

To enjoy a bit of the trendy lifestyle that Lisbon has to offer, I would spend some time shopping in Chiado, a traditionally wealthier part of the city. The neighborhood has stylish shops, local brands and very trendy cafes and restaurants.  

For a great vantage point to admire the city and coastline, I decided to pay a visit to the Castelo de S. Jorge. Walking up through Alfama was an interesting journey of seeing how the old town was built and how it compares to the rest of the city. On the way down, there are plenty of cafes to which you can have a pitstop and enjoy an espresso with a pastel de nata (egg-tart).

 

 

Laidback City with Incredibly Friendly People

My overall impression of Lisbon is a very laidback city with incredibly friendly people. It is quite cheap compared to other ‘major’ European countries and I can definitely see why young people from other European cities would consider living here. You can feel people here like to enjoy life. In my European travel experience, there are only a few cities where you can genuinely feel the vibrant colors of the city – Lisbon is definitely one of these rare cities. A place full of history and character, I would love the opportunity to go back and explore Lisbon more in-depth as well as other parts of Portugal.

Shibaura is located in the Minato ward of Tokyo, Japan, and also in the southeast district of ​​the busy Yamanote Line, accessible from Tamachi Station. As the starting point of Rainbow Bridge that connects to the entertainment hub of Odaiba, Shibaura was developed into a residential and commercial area in the early 2000s. Many corporate headquarters are located in this area. Along with the vigorous development in recent years, the area has complete facilities, including parks, schools, supermarkets, etc. The bay area is now a very popular middle-class residential area.

The Shibaura area is extremely well-connected. The area is reachable from Tamachi Station on the Yamanote Line and Mita Subway Station. By using the subway Mita Line and Asakusa Line’s Mita Station, there are 5 stations directly to Tokyo Commercial Center (Otemachi). The famous Tokyo university "Keio University" is near Mita Station, so this area is also very popular with university students.

From the Tamachi Station, walk along "NAGISA Avenue" to the direction of Rainbow Bridge. You will find supermarkets, restaurants and drug stores along the road. The Shibaura Canal Festival is held here in Shibaura Shopping Street every year at the end of September.

 

 

Near "NAGISA Avenue", you will see a five-story transparent glass building. This is "SHIBAURA HOUSE" designed by the famous architect, Kazuyo Sejima. The first and second floors of the "SHIBAURA HOUSE" are open to the public on weekdays. This is a place where people can work, read books, and eat in order to promote exchanges among the residents in Shibaura.

 

 

Continue walking towards Rainbow Bridge and we will arrive at Shibaura Island. The 4 high-rise residential buildings here are representative of Shibaura's high-end residential buildings. Here you will find canal cafes, restaurants and a 24-hour supermarket.

Shibaura South Port Park is a marine park under the Rainbow Bridge. You can enjoy the bridge, Tokyo Bay and the night view up close. It is also the place where Tokyo people will come to enjoy the first sunrise of the new year on January 1. The park has open spaces such as benches and a sports plaza where you can play baseball and football. A 3-minute walk from Shibaura South Port Park is the entrance of the Rainbow Bridge Walkway. The walkway is about 1.7 kilometers long. It takes about 20-30 minutes to complete the walk. The walkway is divided to the left and right sides (north and south). The north side faces Harumi Toyosu, where you can see the Tokyo Tower; the south side faces Odaiba. If you come to Tokyo for a trip, you might as well visit the Rainbow Bridge Walkway!

 

 

From the rooftop garden of Branz Tower Shibaura, you can enjoy a 360° panaromic view of the bay area. Towards the East, you can appreciate the Rainbow Bridge and mesmerizing sunrise. Towards the West, there is the iconic Tokyo night scene.
